The Whitefish Area Dog Park aims to provide an in-town area which will:
The Whitefish Parks and Recreation Board and Whitefish City Council have approved a conceptual Armory Park Master Plan which includes a 4.9 acre area designated for responsible off-leash dog activity.
This park is the northwest part of Armory Park, behind the skateboard park. The proposed area, which includes an existing pond, will be completely fenced , with access gates, bag dispensers, waste disposal receptacles, accessible pathways, benches, and two-part drinking fountain for dogs and their human companions. The plan also includes temporary fencing within the circumference of the enclosed Dog Park, designed to separate a larger portion for active, well-socialized dogs from a smaller section for small, less-active or shy animals. This feature will also allow field restoration and maintenance.
The proposal will involve re-locating the existing soccer field to the northeast part of the park. The full Armory Park Master Plan includes a provision for a paved access road off Second Ave., leading to ample parking. Lighting and landscaping features are also included in the Master Plan. WAG, the Whitefish Animal Group, was organized to encourage this project, and foster a communal effort to establish much needed legal off-leash space for dog owners and their pets.
